| | AUDREY GARRATT
Born in Kaikoura, Audrey and her husband Bruce raised their 5 children in Wellington, then in 1983 moved to Levin when Audrey became Head of Art at Horowhenua College. She continued teaching there for 9 years enjoying an Exchange at Mayfield Secondary School for the Arts in Canada during 1989. She taught Art at several other secondary schools in the North Island before taking an assignment with Volunteer Service Abroad at Mutare Polytechnic in Zimbabwe. Here she set up an Art Department at the Polytechnic, wrote the courses, trained lecturers and Art teachers and also worked with the National Museum in photographically recording their Monuments and Historical Sites. Entranced by the beauty of Shona children, Audrey painted many of those who visited her at her home and held a solo exhibition featuring children from the families of the people with whom she worked.
Returning to NZ in 2004 Audrey has concentrated on her own painting, while accepting invitations to teach at Art Workshops in the North Island and Christchurch.
This past year has seen Audrey's work become more focused on portraiture, her canvases have become larger and attention to detail stronger. Marianne Muggeridge, her mentor through The Learning Connection has been a great encouragement to her resulting in her application to exhibit in Solo 25 at the Academy, Queen's Wharf Wellington, Oct 6 - 22.
Audrey draws regularly, keeping a sketchbook and pencils with her wherever she goes, especially on her trips overseas when there has been a limited time to paint. She is particularly interested in recording people, wherever they may be, especially their interactions with each other. Her drawings show an ability to record the pattern of light as it falls on her subject matter, which besides people in their environment includes landscapes, cityscapes, working boats and the sea.
The body of work Audrey is presenting in Solo 25 is portraiture executed in oils and all painted within the past year. Some drawings are also included . Each work is a narrative, the story unfolding as the viewer is compelled through the strength of the composition to 'read' the detail on and around the figures, thus discovering more about the person or people in the painting. Her desire is not only to reveal the personality of her models and their uniqueness but also convey to the viewer a sense of 'the familiar' in the situations we experience or witness in daily life.
